Climate Change – Blog action day

Posted by: Lakshmi on: October 15, 2009

This post is inspired by Nita’s and Solilo’s posts on Blog Action Day on climate change.

I wanted to contribute with three concepts that caught my attention in the last several months.

• Reduce or stop the use of bottled water to save money, health and environment. Check out this presentation – water disaster.

• Reduce consumption of meat. I heard this on NPR several months back – Mark Bittman: Eating Right Can Save The Planet.

• Dispose cell phones wisely. In addition to the waves they emit, as people start to discard phones, the chemicals in them will release toxins to the environment.  This is an impending pollution that will grow drastically in the years to come.

Three things that all of us have an opportunity to do! About cell phones, I didn’t know that they are so harmful. Luckily in India due to the second hand market people tend to use phones quite a bit before they are finally discarded. In the west they throw away electronic stuff very quickly.

Of late with all the awareness campaigns and the fact that I am degree holder in Environment Science, there is a feeling of dread at the way we are abusing the earth.

Each one of us have to really really work hard at getting things back into order and allowing for nature to take its own course.

Me: You must share with us your environment science knowledge Bindu. I have not gone through your archives though, in case you have some posts in this topic there.

Came here thru Solz post on BAD and your link there in..

you at least can think of stopping bottled water use.. there are parts of world where its already unsafe to drink water from any other source..

it wont be long before drinking water becomes a luxury :(

Me: You are so right. I agree that there are many places where drinkable water is not available, in which cases bottled water makes sense. However it has become a daily habit for a lot of our population, even when tap water is safe to drink.

Short but important points, Laks!

Valid points there and gud ones :)

Nice to see your action on this day.
Hopped over from your comment..
